Yes. ARK: Survival Ascended uses BattlEye anti-cheat. Official servers require it, most unofficial servers keep it on, and server owners can turn it off on their own server.

Server owners can run an ARK: Survival Ascended server without BattlEye. You can then join it with BattlEye off, but not official servers or servers that keep it on.
If an unofficial server kicks you with a BattlEye error, check whether that server runs with BattlEye on or off, and start the game the same way.
BattlEye runs on your gaming PC and looks for cheats there. A DMA tool like CyNickal's runs on a second PC and reads the game through a DMA card, so nothing runs next to the game. That doesn't make it risk-free: anti-cheats keep changing.

Yes. Official servers require BattlEye.
Only on unofficial servers whose owner turned BattlEye off. Official servers, and servers that keep BattlEye on, won't let you in without it.
Often the game and the server don't match: the server runs with BattlEye and your game started without it, or the other way round. Verifying the game files and restarting fixes many other errors.
BattlEye looks for cheats on the PC you play on. A DMA tool runs on a second PC, but no method is risk-free and anti-cheats keep improving. Our DMA firmware for BattlEye games is Basic and up.
